World Autism Understanding Month 2026

World Autism Awareness Day is recognised globally on Thursday 2 April 2026, marking the beginning of World Autism Understanding Month, observed throughout April.

What is World Autism Understanding Day?

Recognised by the United Nations, World Autism Understanding Day, 2 April, was established to bring attention to autism and to promote the rights, inclusion and wellbeing of Autistic people worldwide. In recent years, the focus has shifted beyond awareness alone, encouraging meaningful understanding, acceptance and action.

This years global World Autism Awareness Day theme

The United Nations theme for World Autism Awareness Day 2026 is:

“Autism and Humanity – Every Life Has Value”

This theme reinforces the importance of recognising the dignity, worth and contributions of Autistic people as an essential part of our shared human future. It calls on communities, organisations and governments to move beyond misconceptions and to create inclusive environments where Autistic people can thrive.

World Autism Understanding Month – April 2026

In Australia, World Autism Understanding Month (WAUM) is led by Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect) and runs throughout April. WAUM recognises that genuine understanding takes time and encourages Australians to learn, reflect and act — not just for one day, but every day.

Throughout World Autism Understanding Month, individuals, families, schools, workplaces and communities are encouraged to:

  • Learn from Autistic lived experience
  • Build confidence in understanding autism
  • Create environments that support inclusion, participation and belonging

A range of resources, stories, blogs and practical tools are shared across the month to support respectful interactions at work, at school and in the community.

Celebrating World Autism Understanding Month through inclusive employment

This year, to mark World Autism Understanding Month, CVGT Employment is focusing on sharing our knowledge about workplace inclusion and the positive role inclusive employment plays in supporting Autistic people across Australia.

We know that meaningful work supports confidence, independence, connection and belonging. Inclusive workplaces benefit Autistic people by recognising strengths, providing appropriate support, and creating environments where neurodiverse employees can thrive.

At CVGT Employment inclusion is central to how we work. Empowerment, respect and equity guide how we support participants and how we partner with employers to build fairer, more accessible workplaces.

By working closely with businesses and industry, we help to:

  • Promote inclusive recruitment and workplace practices
  • Increase understanding of neurodiversity and reasonable workplace adjustments
  • Improve access to sustainable employment for Autistic people and people with disability
  • Create meaningful pathways to work that recognise individual strengths and abilities

When workplaces are inclusive, everyone benefits. We share a vision for communities where Autistic people feel understood, supported and valued for the contribution they make at work and beyond.

Celebrating our participants

World Autism Understanding Month is also a time to celebrate success.

Across our services, we support many Autistic people to build confidence, develop skills and find meaningful employment. Their stories reflect resilience, capability and the positive impact of inclusive workplaces.

Through individualised support, employer partnerships and ongoing encouragement, our participants continue to achieve personal and professional goals — proving that inclusive employment benefits everyone.

How you can get involved

There are many ways individuals and workplaces can show support during World Autism Understanding Month:

  • Take time to learn more about autism and lived experience
  • Share World Autism Understanding Month messages across your networks
  • Participate in Australian initiatives such as Hoodie Up for Autism or Walk for Autism
  • Encourage inclusive practices in workplaces, schools and community spaces
  • Start conversations that promote respect, acceptance and understanding

Small actions, when taken collectively, can make a meaningful difference.

Moving forward together

World Autism Understanding Month reminds us that inclusion is not a one-day event. It’s an ongoing commitment to understanding, respect and opportunity.

This April, and beyond, we stand alongside the Autistic community to promote understanding, champion inclusion and recognise that every life has value.

Connecting more Autistic people to meaningful work

At CVGT Employment we support Autistic people to connect to meaningful work through our Inclusive Employment Australia program.
