Employment and independence a perfect brew for Carmel

Carmel came to CVGT Employment Wagga with a clear goal in mind: a return to the workplace.

But for someone who has an intellectual disability and has not worked since before the COVID pandemic, there have been barriers to overcome.

In recent years, Carmel had attended her disability support service full time, and remaining part of their programs was a priority as she looked for work.

She was also determined to find an employer who understood her disability and capabilities.

The CVGT Disability Employment Services team at Wagga Wagga moved quickly, supporting Carmel to update her resume and to approach prospective employers.

Within six weeks, a local cafe had offered her a position with duties including washing dishes, emptying bins and organising stock.

It was a role she enjoyed immediately, but some patience, perseverance and support were required.

“I struggled in the beginning when the school holidays started and work was really busy,” Carmel says.

“I got extremely overwhelmed and had to go home early.

“But my employer and consultant at CVGT told me that this is okay and that everyone has bad days.

“Now I feel more comfortable when working in busy times.”

That comfort and support allows Carmel to enjoy the opportunities to socialise with customers and contribute to the workplace.

Her shifts are also organised to allow her to continue attending her disability support service, while the CVGT Wagga Team continues to support Carmel and her employer.

I am grateful CVGT Employment found me a job where my employer understands my disability and capabilities.
I highly recommend getting service from CVGT Employment– the Wagga team have really helped me achieve my goal in gaining employment.
