ADHD Awareness Month 2026: The many faces of ADHD at work

October is ADHD Awareness Month, a time to build understanding, challenge misconceptions and celebrate the strengths and diversity of people living with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

This year’s theme,“The Many Faces of ADHD,” recognises that no two people experience ADHD in the same way. ADHD can present differently across individuals, ages, genders and workplaces, making awareness, understanding and support more important than ever.

For many people, ADHD is more than difficulties with attention. It can influence how a person manages time, organises tasks, regulates emotions, processes information and navigates daily responsibilities. Yet it can also be associated with creativity, innovation, resilience, problem-solving and the ability to think differently. Understanding the many faces of ADHD helps create workplaces and communities where people can thrive.

Understanding the many faces of ADHD

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects people of all backgrounds. While some people may display noticeable hyperactivity, others may experience challenges that are less visible, such as difficulty concentrating, forgetfulness, overwhelm or mental fatigue.

The theme ‘The Many Faces of ADHD‘ highlights the reality that ADHD does not look the same for everyone. Some people are diagnosed in childhood, while others receive a diagnosis much later in life. Some may have developed strategies to mask their challenges, making their ADHD difficult for others to recognise.

By moving beyond stereotypes, we can better appreciate the unique experiences, strengths and support needs of people living with ADHD.

ADHD can affect people in different ways, and many challenges are not immediately visible. Building understanding helps reduce stigma and creates more supportive workplaces and communities where people can thrive.

ADHD in the workplace

Workplaces play an important role in supporting people with ADHD to achieve their career goals. The right environment can empower individuals to build confidence, showcase their strengths and succeed in meaningful employment.

People with ADHD often bring valuable attributes to the workplace, including:

  • Creative thinking and innovation
  • Strong problem- solving abilities
  • Energy and enthusiasm
  • The ability to think outside the box
  • Adaptability and resilience
  • Passion for areas of interest

At the same time, some people may face challenges with prioritising tasks, managing deadlines, staying organised or working in environments with frequent distractions. Understanding these challenges is the first step towards creating a more inclusive workplace.

Simple adjustments can make a significant difference, including:

  • Clear communication and expectations
  • Flexible work practices where possible
  • Written instructions and task lists
  • Structured routines and regular check-ins
  • Quiet workspaces or strategies to reduce distractions
  • Supportive managers who encourage open conversations

Anthony says working at Bunnings Wagga “helps with his anxiety and ADHD.”

“Work provides routine, it keeps the mind occupied, offers social interactions and can help those with ADHD focus their energy productively,” says Anthony, a CVGT Employment Participant.

His employment journey highlights how the right support and an inclusive workplace can help people with ADHD build confidence, overcome barriers and thrive at work.

When employers focus on strengths and provide appropriate support, everyone benefits.

Creating inclusive employment opportunities

Inclusive workplaces recognise that people work differently and that diversity of thought can strengthen teams, improve innovation and contribute to business success.

Employers who embrace neurodiversity help create environments where people with ADHD and other neurodivergent conditions can contribute their skills and reach their full potential. By fostering understanding and reducing stigma, businesses can attract and retain talented employees who bring unique perspectives to the workplace.
