Down Syndrome Awareness Month 2026: Celebrating inclusion, capability and opportunity
October marks Down Syndrome Awareness Month, a time to recognise and celebrate the talents, achievements and aspirations of people with Down syndrome. It is also an opportunity to encourage greater understanding, challenge misconceptions and promote inclusive communities and workplaces where everyone has the opportunity to participate and thrive.
At CVGT Employment, inclusion is at the heart of everything we do. Through our Inclusive Employment Australia program and partnerships with employers, we support people with disability, including those with Down syndrome, to achieve their employment goals, build confidence and create meaningful futures.
About Down syndrome
Down syndrome is a genetic condition caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21. People with Down syndrome have unique strengths, personalities and abilities and, like everyone, their interests, experiences and aspirations vary.
While Down syndrome can affect physical development and learning, people with Down syndrome can lead fulfilling lives, contribute to their communities and achieve success in education and employment when provided with the right opportunities and support.
However, misconceptions can still create barriers to inclusion, particularly in employment and community participation. Down Syndrome Awareness Month is an opportunity to challenge these assumptions, promote understanding and celebrate the valuable contributions people with Down syndrome make every day.

About Down Syndrome Awareness Month
Held each October, Down Syndrome Awareness Month is a global campaign that celebrates people with Down syndrome and promotes greater understanding, inclusion and equal opportunities. Throughout the month, individuals, families, organisations and communities come together to raise awareness, share stories and advocate for a more inclusive society.
The month encourages people to look beyond stereotypes and recognise the achievements, talents and potential of people with Down syndrome.

It is also a chance to highlight the importance of accessible education, meaningful employment and community participation, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to live, work and thrive.
Creating opportunities through inclusive employment
At CVGT Employment, we believe everyone deserves the opportunity to pursue meaningful work, contribute their skills and achieve their goals. Through our Inclusive Employment Australia program and partnerships with employers, we support people with disability, including people with Down syndrome, to find sustainable employment and build rewarding careers.
Everyone deserves the opportunity to participate in the workforce, contribute their skills and be recognised for their abilities.
While people with Down syndrome continue to face barriers to employment, more employers are recognising the value of creating inclusive workplaces where people of all abilities can thrive. At CVGT Employment, we work alongside Participants and employers to identify strengths, create tailored pathways to employment and provide ongoing support to ensure long-term success.

Inclusive employment is about looking beyond assumptions and focusing on what people can do. When employers embrace diversity, the benefits extend across the entire workplace, creating stronger teams, improving workplace culture and strengthening connections with the communities they serve.
Supporting people with Down sydrome in the workplace
Meaningful employment provides more than a pay cheque. It offers independence, purpose, social connection and opportunities for personal growth.
Supporting employees with Down syndrome doesn’t require special treatment. In most cases, it comes down to creating an inclusive environment, providing clear communication and recognising each person’s individual strengths and capabilities.
Every person is different, so the most effective approach is to listen, learn and work together to identify what support will help them succeed.
Watch the ACCIONA and CVGT Employment success story video. Through its inclusive employment efforts, ACCIONA welcomed two employees, Letitia and Owen, into meaningful paid roles. Both employees live with Down syndrome. Hear directly from employees, mentors and managers about what worked, the support provided and the impact on their workplace.
