Thriving through inclusion

Anthony says working at Bunnings Wagga ‘helps with his anxiety and ADHD.’

“I get ready for work two hours before my shift because I’m excited to start. The work environment at Bunnings is fantastic. Everyone is friendly and welcoming.”

Work provides routine, it keeps the mind occupied, offers social interactions and can help those with ADHD, like Anthony, focus their energy productively.

Overcoming barriers

In 2022, Anthony connected with CVGT Employment Wagga after finishing year 12 seeking support to find work.

“It was hard trying to find work. Employers had certain criteria that I felt I couldn’t meet, which made my confidence and self-esteem go down.”

My CVGT Employment Consultant and I would apply for jobs. We would go for walks down the street to hand out resumes.

“My anxiety would make me feel nauseous when employers wouldn’t give me feedback or call back,” Anthony adds.

Despite the challenges, Anthony remained motivated. After completing an online application for a Team Member position at Bunnings Wagga and attending an interview with his Employment Consultant, Anthony started work in November 2024.

Work has improved my communication skills. I’m no longer afraid to talk to customers. I also remember aisle numbers and products now.

Accessibility and support

Inclusive workplaces like Bunnings play a key role in fostering an environment where people with disabilities, such as Anthony, can thrive. Anthony explains, ‘ADHD impacts my focus and attention. I sometimes find it hard to focus on multiple tasks at once and I get distracted easily. Anxiety makes me feel nauseous and sick when thinking about certain events.’

By fostering inclusion, Bunnings and CVGT Employment’s support helps Anthony manage any challenges so he can succeed in his role.

“We provide post-placement support, making sure Anthony and Bunnings are well-supported for a successful employment journey,” says Jonty Ellis, CVGT Employment Business Development Consultant.

This support can include ongoing training, workplace adjustments, and regular check-ins to monitor progress and well-being. Such supports not only enhance job retention but also boost the confidence and productivity of employees with disabilities, fostering a more inclusive and supportive work culture.

They’ve also attended some of my shifts with me which has helped make me feel more comfortable and settled into the team.”
