Starting your career with confidence
Leaving school can be exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming. Knowing where to start, how to approach employers and how to turn a passion into a job is not always clear.
The good news is you do not have to figure it out alone.
CVGT Employment’s Transition to Work program helps young people take that first step. With practical support, personalised mentoring and real-world preparation, it turns uncertainty into action.
Jasper’s story shows just how powerful that support can be.
The right support at the right time
At 19, Jasper knew he wanted a career in hairdressing.
“I absolutely love hair styling. Creative hobbies such as photography and wig styling jump started my interest in hair.”
He just did not know how to get started.
“Before joining CVGT’S Employment Transition to Work program, I had struggled a lot with my confidence and with getting out there. I definitely knew I wanted to pursue hairdressing but felt unsure where to start and what to do.”
From day one, his CVGT Employment youth mentor Chloe recognised his potential.
“Jasper’s genuine interest and eagerness to get an apprenticeship was clear straight away. He was very shy, had no employment history and lacked confidence, even speaking to me in the beginning.”
Through Transition to Work, Jasper developed the skills and confidence to move forward, from preparing applications to believing in himself.
Taking the first step
Jasper’s biggest breakthrough came from walking into salons and asking about opportunities.
With each conversation, his confidence grew.
CVGT Employment helped me by supporting me with cover letters, helping me find work experience, interviewing skills and building my confidence. They were so supportive and were very encouraging which I felt played a huge part with my confidence.

He kept going, visiting salons across Albury and Wodonga until finally he landed the job he was looking for, an apprenticeship in hairdressing at Funky Cutz Salon.
When rejection becomes motivation
Like many young job seekers, Jasper faced knockbacks along the way. The difference was, he did not let them stop him.
“My passion for the industry is what definitely kept me going, despite the knockbacks I was so determined to pursue the career since it’s something I’m so genuinely passionate about.”
With support from Chloe, he learnt how to stay positive, adapt his approach and keep moving forward. His confidence began to show not just in how he spoke, but in how he presented and expressed himself.
Stepping into the industry
Jasper’s story sends a clear message to young people starting out. You do not have to be perfect. Employers are looking for attitude, initiative and a willingness to learn.
Jasper stood out for exactly those reasons.
“Jasper was a standout candidate, we interviewed and trialled several people and he showed us the most initiative,” says Alannah, Funky Cutz Salon Manager.
His persistence and preparation left a strong impression.

Jasper is a lovely person and has really showed us many strengths within the hair industry. He’s got a great work ethic and always willing to learn and get in and give anything a go.

Now, Jasper is thriving as an apprentice hairdresser, building strong relationships and growing his skills every day.
“Jasper has settled in really well and has already made some great connections with many of our lovely clientele.”
You can start too
Jasper’s story is not just about getting a job. It is about building confidence, backing yourself and taking that first step, even when it feels hard.
It’s a huge confidence boost and made me realise I can do what I set my mind to. It’s changed how I see myself and my future.
