Tarnya’s Journey to Confidence, Qualification and Employment

When Tarnya first connected with CVGT Employment Ararat in October 2021, she was facing a combination of challenges that made the idea of returning to work feel out of reach. At 47, she had been unemployed for 17 years, was without a driver’s licence due to drink driving, and struggled with low self‑esteem linked to significant dental issues. These barriers, combined with long‑term unemployment, left her feeling uncertain about her future and unsure of her own potential.

CVGT Employment developed a tailored support plan to help Tarnya rebuild her confidence and regain control of her life. This included assistance with dental care to restore her smile, counselling to address alcohol use and support her wellbeing, and access to First Aid and Food Handling certifications. Each milestone became a turning point, helping Tarnya rediscover her capability and belief in herself.

I feel CVGT went above and beyond what my expectations were to assist me.  All of the consultants believed in me, even when I didn’t believe in myself

In February, with encouragement from her CVGT Consultant, Tarnya enrolled in a Certificate III in Individual Support. Not only did she complete the qualification—she excelled. Her dedication paid off when she secured a role with a local aged care facility, marking her first job in nearly two decades.

Her CVGT employment consultant Michelle is proud of Tarnya and how far she has come in her journey overcoming so many obstacles:

Tarnya has been so determined to improve her life. I wish I could bottle her drive and determination

Today, Tarnya is working, rebuilding her independence, and is well on her way to regaining her licence and getting her car back on the road. She continues to receive support from CVGT as she strengthens her new foundation.

“My new job has allowed me to make new friends and expand my social network.  I see people I work with at the shops and on the train. I like that I have gained the resident’s trust and that they and their families look forward to seeing me”

Tarnya’s journey has been long, but her determination—combined with the right support—has transformed her life. Her story is a powerful reminder that with persistence, encouragement, and the right opportunities, meaningful change is always possible.

“If you put in the work and are open to suggestions from your CVGT Employment Consultants, you can succeed”
