Stephen’s story: Turning barriers into breakthroughs
Finding the right support
Stephen, a passionate software developer who is blind, faced significant challenges in his job search. Many job platforms were inaccessible, and some application processes excluded him entirely. “Not all job platforms are as accessible as others,” Stephen explained. “It made it more difficult to do a comprehensive search.”
But after discovering CVGT Employment through a Google search, Stephen found the support he needed from CVGT’s Maroondah-based program specialist Rebecca Webbern and CVGT Employment Consultant Golda. “They helped me with my resume, hooked me up with job applications, and even helped me do a video interview in the office because I didn’t have a webcam at home,” recounts Stephen.
Thriving at REA Group
With Rebecca’s support, Stephen’s journey led him to a role at REA Group, where he now works as a Customer Support Consultant. From day one, REA demonstrated a genuine commitment to inclusion. A colleague even developed a Chrome plugin using AI to describe screen content – an invaluable tool for Stephen.
Stephen is accompanied daily by his guide dog, Diego, who has become a familiar and beloved presence at the REA Group Richmond office. Diego has his own designated spaces to rest, drink, and use the toilet, reflecting REA’s thoughtful approach to accessibility.

Celebrating Diego, Stephen’s Guide Dog
On International Guide Dog Day, REA Group proudly featured Stephen and Diego on their social media channels. The post celebrated Diego’s role and the broader impact of guide dogs across Australia, noting that more than 1,500 guide dogs assist people who are blind or have low vision to live independently. Stephen also shared a valuable tip:
“Always ask the handler before giving a guide dog a pat… The handler will have a better sense for whether a pat will be okay, or if it’ll reinforce bad habits.”
Learning through inclusion
Maddy, REA Group’s HR advisor, and Amy, Stephen’s former manager and Customer Support Team Leader, reflected on the experience of welcoming Stephen into the team. While there was initial uncertainty about the best way to support Stephen, the team quickly embraced the opportunity to learn and grow. Sitting side-by-side with Stephen gave them a new perspective on accessibility and privilege in the workplace.
We’ve learned so much from Stephen… It’s not about having everything perfect from day one. It’s about listening, adapting, and learning together.

Strengthening collaboration and support

During a recent visit to REA Group, Rebecca Webbern worked closely with Stephen’s team to explore new ways to support his growth and inclusion. One exciting outcome was REA Group’s interest in organising a team volunteering activity that could include Stephen. Drawing on her connection with Guide Dogs Australia, Rebecca linked the Guide Dogs team with Mary, the REA volunteer coordinator.
The team is also actively supporting Stephen’s transition into a more IT-focused role. “I’ve learnt a bit more about the different types of roles that may be available as a software developer,” Stephen said. “There may be a different type of IT role that’s more suitable for me than what I originally imagined.” To support this, REA is working to implement JAWS screen reader compatibility within their Zendesk platform.
Regular meetings have been established between Stephen’s manager, REA Group HR, and Rebecca to ensure ongoing support. In addition, both Stephen’s manager and Rebecca will attend a training session at Guide Dogs Victoria to better understand how to support individuals who are blind or have low vision.
These collaborative efforts were made possible thanks to the connection Rebecca formed with Kaye, Employment Service Lead at Guide Dogs Australia, at the 2024 Melbourne Disability & Workability Expo.
A message of hope
Now working nearly full-time, Stephen continues to thrive – professionally and personally. “REA Group is genuinely inclusive,” he said. “They’ll give anybody a shot. You still have to be able to do the job, but they’ll give you a chance to show that you can – and that’s as much as anyone can ask.”
Stephen’s advice to others navigating similar challenges is simple but powerful:
You only need one person to say yes.
