From homelessness to hope

Jezz was living in a tent at Myrtle Park, thirty kilometres from Launceston, struggling with homelessness, addiction, and severe social anxiety. Determined to change the course of his life, he took a brave first step in August 2020 by reaching out to CVGT Employment for support. That moment marked the beginning of his journey towards stability, purpose, and hope.

“Because of his social anxiety, even simple conversations were really challenging for him,” Maryanne, CVGT Employment Support Consultant said of first meeting Jezz. “I walked him through our Employment Services and offered him guidance and support to take the next step.”

A path forward

In the months that followed, Jezz consistently attended fortnightly appointments at the CVGT Employment Launceston office, showing his commitment to make a lasting change.

We worked together to find him stable accommodation and started making real headway towards securing, meaningful employment.

By June 2021, Jezz was no longer homeless, having secured safe and suitable accommodation. With Maryanne’s support, he also landed a casual landscaping job, his first step back into the workforce. His life goals were beginning to fall into place.  

A new beginning for Jezz

By March 2022, Jezz had progressed to full-time work in landscaping and construction. With Maryanne’s support, he was enrolled in a Certificate III in Landscaping and Construction, officially launching his traineeship and setting the foundation for a long-term career in the industry.

“To support Jezz in successfully completing his traineeship, CVGT Employment provided the necessary tools and equipment, ensuring he could get started without facing significant out-of-pocket expenses.”

Strength through support

After six months in the workforce, Jezz chose to continue receiving support from CVGT Employment through the ‘Ongoing Support’. This tailored assistance is designed to help people with disability maintain and thrive in their employment. It can include on-the-job training, workplace modifications, employer liaison, and access to services such as assistive technology.

“Over the years, Jezz has achieved countless personal milestones, from securing stable accommodation and earning his driver’s licence, to saving for a car and actively working on his mental health through counselling at the Mental Health Centre in Launceston. His journey has been one of resilience and growth, and he continues to go from strength to strength.”
