From the sidelines to the supermarket
Two years ago, Kobe had days “where I didn’t want to leave the house. I felt anxious and really shut off from society.” Searching for work, Kobe joined the CVGT Employment Disability Employment Services program in Wodonga, seeking support.
“From early on, I knew that Kobe just needed a voice. A platform so he could show his capabilities and shine,” says Khoa Le, CVGT Employment Business Development Officer.
Building a connection
Bonding over their love of football, Khoa and Kobe formed a connection built on support and mutual respect.
I feel comfortable speaking to Khoa. If anything is going on at work or at home, I know that he won’t judge me. Just knowing he is there helps to ease the anxiety.

Role of employment consultants
Employment consultants can significantly benefit individuals with disabilities by offering tailored guidance and resources. This support boosts confidence, enhances skills, and opens doors to meaningful job opportunities, fostering independence and improving quality of life.
“I guess my role has been one of support and encouragement, as I always knew this version of Kobe was there underneath the surface, waiting to break through,” Khoa says. “When Kobe first came to appointments, he would say a few words and there was little to no eye contact. I knew I had to find a way to connect with him. This is where our love of sports came into play.”
“His face would light up whenever we talked about AFL, particularly his team, the Geelong Cats. Through many weeks of just building rapport through our mutual love of sport, Kobe began to make breakthroughs. He started engaging meaningfully in appointments and even talking about what he envisaged for himself in the future.”
Boost in confidence
Kobe has now been with Coles supermarket for over 14 months and is thriving.
CVGT Employment supported me with motivation at a time when I felt things weren’t going my way.

“They regained my trust in the system and encouraged me to find a good balance,” Kobe adds.
Since finding employment, Kobe has grown in confidence each day. He is now back playing football and looking towards bigger goals for the future.
