Brody builds his confidence to connect
For job seekers looking for work, getting your foot in the door can be a challenge. Brody, like many young people new to the workforce, lacked the confidence to connect with local employers. That all changed when CVGT Employment referred Brody into the Employability Skills Training (EST) course, designed to prepare him for success.
Earning skills and points
The Workforce Australia Points-Based Activation System (PBAS) gives job seekers the flexibility to meet their mutual obligation requirements through a range of activities tailored to the individual. These include job searches, interviews, commencing a job, doing paid work, study, and training, or participating in a variety of activities. Brody, who struggled to meet his PBAS with job search alone, wanted to build his confidence and employability, so he opted for what is called the Block Two: EST – Preparing for Success course.
The course gave Brody the skills, confidence, and opportunity to link with local employers. “Brody did a lot of work on interview training and improved out of sight,” EST trainer Cheryl says. “We also did quite a bit of work on confidence building and breathing techniques to overcome interview nerves.”
CVGT employment consultant Sarah says she saw a huge change in Brody as a direct result of being able to participate in the course. “It provided him with a clear pathway to improving his employment prospects in a relaxed, inclusive and supportive environment.”
Brody agrees: “I feel a lot more confident and open to speak to people face to face now. I was able to practice networking skills and address my PBAS target while doing so.”
Securing meaningful work
In late September, Brody secured full time work as a labourer in Albury. He now spends his time working with confidence – and is thoroughly enjoying it.
Brody’s journey to finding meaningful work highlights the benefits of job seekers being able to tailor their mutual obligation requirements to their individual needs. Because Brody had that flexibility, he was able to address his biggest barrier and subsequently find a job he really enjoys.
