Cleaning workshop with Karen community in Bendigo an outstanding success
Through a partnership with Bendigo Community Health Services and Letizia’s Training and Development, our Bendigo CVGT team organised a cleaning training course with Karen participants in Bendigo that saw 23 participants attending for the full three days and gaining valuable skills to start a career in cleaning.
Participants in the program were very excited to be a part of it, and with the support of a Karen interpreter from BCHS, they were able to understand the content delivered.
So I feel that I’m so fortunate that I got to be a part of the training and the trainers taught and spoke really well. They spoke English in a way that was really easy to understand., and they cared for all of us.

The course came about through discussions with Bendigo Community Health Services about what would work well for Karen participants
We had a bit of a brainstorming session with Bendigo Community Health Services and came up with the idea that cleaning was something that the community themselves felt that they could achieve.

Subsequently, BCHS assisted with translation of Cleaning training resource modules and providing an interpreter during the course to translate for the participants.
It’s such a privilege to be able to work with these communities and with CVGT, who have taken such an interest in looking at how we can build capacity to work in such an innovative way with us.

Following the completion of the training, a crew of Karen cleaners have been offered the job of cleaning the windows at the Eaglehawk Football Club clubrooms where the training was held. Another participant has been employed at MAD Cow.
I couldn’t be more happy or proud of the efforts that we’ve put in and we’ve been able to achieve out of running this course, so hopefully this is not the first and last
