Late-bloomer Mel targets career in education

Becoming a parent came late in life for single mum Mel.

After a long career in the automotive industry, she took time away from work to raise her daughter.

But with the girl approaching school age, Mel started thinking about her future.

Returning to work after becoming a parent

Returning to her former occupation would be a challenge, and she wanted a meaningful career to complement her duties as a mum.

During 2022, she was referred to the CVGT Employment ParentsNext team at our Preston office in Melbourne’s north.

How ParentsNext can help you return to work after having children

ParentsNext supports people to return to the workforce after taking time out of employment to raise children.

She was linked with CVGT mentor Pauline, who immediately looked at how Mel could find a balance she wanted between work and life.

Pauline suggested a shift to the education sector, with family-friendly hours, training and roles available.

Making the most of the time while her daughter was at kindergarten, and with support from family and friends, Mel made the jump into a Cert III in Education support (Teachers Aid).

Finding the perfect job for work life balance

It has been a perfect fit.

Mel loves the course and looks forward to attending onsite to meet her new colleagues also entering the Education industry.

She recently attended an excursion to a primary school, where they were involved in the school setting.

She feels that being a teacher’s aid is going to be a great career for her and her daughter’s future.

How CVGT helped Mel return to work

As well as identifying the course, CVGT Employment has been able to help Mel and her training college to access government support and subsidies to cover the costs involved.

We have also assisted Mel to gain her Working with Children’s Check and access first aid training so she can complete her upcoming placements.

Looking forward to being a working parent

Mel is now looking forward to completing her course and starting paid work, all while having time to spend with her daughter as she grows.

I am blessed to know Pauline. My family have noticed how happy I have been recently.
