To work in Australia, you need to have the right to work. This means you must be one of the following:

• An Australian citizen
• A permanent resident
• A holder of a Temporary Protection Visa (TPV)
• A holder of a Safe Haven Enterprise Visa (SHEV)

If you fit into any of these categories, you have the right to work in Australia.

What is an Australian citizen?

An Australian citizen is someone who was born in Australia, has an Australian parent, or has been granted citizenship after living in Australia for a certain period. Australian citizens have the right to live and work in Australia permanently.

What is a permanent resident?

A permanent resident is someone who has been granted the right to live in Australia indefinitely. Permanent residents have many of the same rights as citizens, including the right to work, but they do not have the right to vote in federal elections. 

What is a Temporary Protection Visa (TPV) Holder?

A Temporary Protection Visa (TPV) holder is someone who has been granted temporary protection in Australia because they are found to be owed protection obligations. TPVs allow the holder to stay in Australia for up to three years, during which they can work and access certain government services.

What is a Safe Haven Enterprise Visa (SHEV) Holder?

A Safe Haven Enterprise Visa (SHEV) holder is someone who has been granted temporary protection in Australia and intends to work or study in a regional area. SHEVs allow the holder to stay in Australia for up to five years and provide a pathway to apply for certain other visas if they meet specific work or study requirements.
