NAIDOC Week celebration at CVGT Shepparton

CVGT celebrates NAIDOC week with a traditional smoking ceremonyA celebration of the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples will take place at a NAIDOC Week morning tea at CVGT Australia’s Shepparton office.

The event, which forms part of the NAIDOC Week, will include a Welcome to Country by Aunty Faye Lynam and a traditional smoking ceremony performed by Uncle Colin Jnr.

CVGT Deputy CEO John Lynch said the NAIDOC Week morning tea provided CVGT with an opportunity to demonstrate the company’s appreciation of, and commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.

“CVGT acknowledges the traditional custodians of the lands on which our company is located and where we conduct our business.

“We are committed to honouring Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ unique cultural and spiritual relationships to the land, waters and seas and their rich contribution to society.

“CVGT is celebrating Indigenous culture at our NAIDOC Week morning tea with representatives from the local Indigenous community, government organisations and job seekers/participants registered with CVGT,” said Mr Lynch.

This year’s theme, VOICE. TREATY. TRUTH – Let’s work together for a shared future acknowledges that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have always wanted an enhanced role in decision making in Australia’s democracy.

NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

NAIDOC Week is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. The week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

NAIDOC originally stood for ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’. This committee was once responsible for organising national activities during NAIDOC Week and its acronym has since become the name of the week itself.

More information about NAIDOC week can be found at the website.
